  • The Cigarette Surfboard, a one-of-a-kind work of art, was made for an international competition held by the surf company Vissla, in collaboration with the Surfrider Foundation. The goal of the contest was to create an article of surf-craft out of upcycled materials. Surfers and industrial artists Taylor Lane and Ben Judkins created this special surfboard from cigarette butts that were collected from the beach. “We saw this as an opportunity to address a major issue that, as surfers, we experience daily: beach and ocean pollution.” Said Lane and Judkins. “So we asked: what kind of trash could we salvage to make a statement about littering and coastal health while capturing the hearts and minds of surfers, environmentalists, and everyday citizens? The answer: cigarette butts, the most discarded item in the world (5.6 trillion a year!). Plus they are made of plastic – cellulose acetate – which means they will never fully decompose, and each butt contains toxic chemicals that leach into the environment.” Ben and Taylor took their surfboard to Hawaii and legendary singer, environmentalist and surfer Jack Johnson took it out to ride some waves. Value: Priceless Generously donated by Taylor Lane and Ben Judkins If you would like to bid on this live auction lot, but you are not attending the SeaChange event, not to worry! We can bid on your behalf; please fill out the absentee form here and send it back to us before September 6th.
